ABOUT DANCERS' WORKSHOP
Dancers’ Workshop is a center for movement and dance education, performance and outreach.
We are a dance school, a presenter and a commissioner of new work. We have a statewide outreach program, an open program for adult fitness and dance enthusiasts and a professional dance company.
New dancers and experienced dance artists can find a home at Dancers' Workshop.
We are here to serve our community! Whether you are interested in dance, fitness or restorative classes, theater performances or community outreach opportunities, there is something for you or your student. Dancers’ Workshop is a place for our community, visiting tourists and guest artists to feel welcome, inspired and revitalized. A Dancers’ Workshop experience might include free open rehearsals, master classes and stage performances by world-class dance companies like New York City Ballet; it might include special workshops like Country Western Swing; it might include the opportunity for high caliber guest artists the time and space to hone their craft and create new works. Whatever you are interested in, Dancers’ Workshop is a supportive haven to help get your body and creativity flowing.
Each part of our organization directly impacts and supports the others.
Our own professional company in residence, Contemporary Dance Wyoming, increases access to dance year-round. Members serve as the teaching staff at the School and teach dance education in the school systems through our statewide outreach programs. Members also teach fitness and dance classes in our adult open program, including Pilates, MELT®, Ballet and more.
We bring world-renowned dance companies and influential performance artists to our community, including New York City Ballet MOVES, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, Savion Glover, Gallim Dance, Ann Carlson, BJM Danse Montreal, David Dorfman Dance, Alonzo King LINES Ballet and more. Through this presenting piece of our overall programming, we offer unique opportunities for students at the School and local audiences to engage directly with visiting artists and artists-in-residence. Through open rehearsals, master classes, workshops and stage performances, we provide as many pathways of access to dance as possible.
What started in a log cabin in Wilson, WY over forty years ago, as a grassroots gathering place for dance, has grown slowly and determinedly into a nationally recognized center of dance, a home of excellence in dance education and performance. For over 40 years, Dancers’ Workshop has been sharing the art form of dance through education, performance and outreach. In our grassroots beginnings, classes were held in a small log cabin. The basement of the Pink Garter Theater provided a quirky (and possibly haunted) backdrop to an exciting period of growth for Dancers’ Workshop from 1985 to 2004. We’ve always dreamed bigger than the four walls surrounding us and in 1998, Babs Case became Dancers’ Workshop’s Artistic Director, founding Contemporary Dance Wyoming and helping propel Dancers’ Workshop forward. 2005 marked our move into the, then, brand new education pavilion of The Center, and we have since provided our students and visiting artists with a spacious and state-of-the art space for dance.
While the School at Dancers’ Workshop remains central to our organization, what we do here at Dancers’ Workshop continues to evolve. Since 2013, Dancers’ Workshop is now the commissioner of new dance work from internationally-known companies including Gallim Dance, David Dorfman Dance and Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company. We believe in not only the creation of new work, with our own professional company Contemporary Dance Wyoming, but supporting the creation of new work. We are proud to continue presenting a myriad of exceptional programming that supports dance and the arts in our community and beyond.
Our mission at Dancers' Workshop is to enrich lives by offering excellence and diversity in dance experiences through education, performance, and outreach for students and audiences of all ages.
